Jana Sweeny is an accomplished communications expert with over 20 years of experience. She worked in public affairs, disaster planning and response, and service to the military for the American Red Cross for more than nineteen years – including serving as Vice President of Public Affairs. She has developed and executed communications plans and served as the lead for public affairs for multiple international and domestic disasters. She has been an on-the-record spokesperson for large scale disasters, including Hurricane Katrina, the 2010 Haiti Earthquake and many others.
She has responded to dozens of natural and manmade disasters over the course of her career both domestically and internationally. She is also experienced in operations management for domestic and international disasters and has carried out operations in a wartime setting.
She is highly experienced in developing and providing training in media relations, crisis communications, and public affairs. She has led large departments during times of transition ensuring stability and forward movement. She is a strong communicator with ability to clearly articulate and translate complex information.
She currently runs a communication consultant firm specializing in communications strategy, message development, media relations training and crisis communications.
She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology from the Washington University in St. Louis and a Master’s Degree in Applied History from University of South Carolina. She has also completed courses in crisis and risk communication at American Military University. She is certified in a number of ICS courses, PMDPro and HAZWOPER and has had extensive crisis communication training through the Department of Defense, the Center for Disease Control, FEMA and the global Red Cross network.
